Guides you can use this week.

Checklists, not theory. If a date on your letter falls within the next two weeks, call us before working through every step alone.

When a notice arrives

Keep the envelope. Find the notice number, the tax years, and the “respond by” date. Never ignore a certified letter. Compare the balance to what you remember filing; unfiled years are a different problem from a balance you already reported.

Catching up on returns

List every missing year. Collect W-2s, 1099s, and records of estimated payments. Request wage and income transcripts for the gaps. File the required years, then ask what the remaining balance can become.

If your wages are being levied

Ask your employer for a copy of the levy and note the pay date it starts. A release request needs a reason the IRS recognizes: an approved agreement, hardship, or a problem with the levy itself. Have a pay stub and a list of necessary monthly expenses ready.
